Adding a column of numbers using the SUM function

Now try using the SUM function:

1. Click in D13.
2. Type  =SUM(D7:D11)
3. Press the Enter key.

If you wish, instead of typing D7:D11 you could just highlight those particular cells. Excel would fill in the description of the range and supply the closing bracket.
